Symphony of Northwest Arkansas to wrap up season with ‘electrifying’ program on Saturday, May 10

SoNA Masterworks IIIAfter eight consecutive sold-out performances, the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas (SoNA) will again provide patrons with a chance to experience the magic of its 2013-14 Season with the Masterworks III finale concert on Saturday, May 10 at Walton Arts Center’s Baum Walker Hall in Fayetteville. Show time is 7:30 p.m.

Performing under the baton of acclaimed Music Director Paul Haas, the region’s finest classical musicians will present a collection of orchestral works taking audience members on a warp-speed journey through time. The Masterworks III repertoire opens with Fowler’s energetic Tapu’at, followed by Mozart’s “Haffner” symphony and Mahler’s “Titan” Symphony No. 1, both written in Vienna, about 100 years apart.

“When I became SoNA’s music director, I vowed to present our audience with only the best of the best in classical music,” Haas says. “This program has one of my absolute favorites, Mahler’s First Symphony, as well as one of Mozart’s glittering jewels: the ‘Haffner’ symphony. Add to that Paul Fowler’s gorgeous and moving Tapu’at, and you have the ingredients for an electrifying evening.”

Haas continues, “Mahler famously said that the entire world is contained within each one of his symphonies. It’s this incredible breadth and depth of emotion, of experience, of spirit, that captivates me whenever I listen to this music. It’s mind-blowing to think that this is only his first symphony — it’s that powerful. I can’t wait to share all of this astonishing music with Northwest Arkansas!”

Ticket prices for Masterworks III are $28, $38 and $48. Ticket holders are also invited to attend a Creative Conversation with Maestro Haas in Walton Arts Center’s Starr Theatre, at 6:45 p.m.
