Tessa Velez
Key Account Manager at Danone North America & Social Media Graphics Lead for NextUp Northwest Arkansas

Why is it important to you to be part of NextUp?
Being involved in NextUp has allowed me to serve and influence my organization despite being so early on in my career. Whether it’s a lunch and learn or a seasonal mixer, every event allows me to feel more connected to the great community NWA has to offer.

What has been your biggest benefit from being part of NextUp?
The biggest benefit is easily the people you get to meet! There is no other organization that brings so many like-minded, driven individuals into one room. In my short time as a volunteer, I have already met people that have shifted my perspective.

What are you looking most forward to with NextUp over the next year?
I’m looking forward to attending the NextUp Leadership Summit in Chicago next week. I look forward to exploring Chicago, learning from all the workshops and speakers, and directly apply all that I’ve learned when I get home. I’m especially excited to share all I learn with my organization to help everyone in their career journey.

Best part of your job:
The best part of my job is seeing the strategy behind each brand unfold over time. Whether it’s a back-to-school campaign for Danimals or a new packaging rollout for Light N Fit, I get to see months of hard work from all cross-functional teams come to fruition. It’s amazing to be a part of the collaboration and then to finally see it on shelf when I’m grocery shopping.

Personal Mantra:
I have a small bracelet that I got in elementary school that says, “She believed she could, so she did.” I’ve kept it throughout the years, and it always comes to mind when I’m facing a difficult situation.

Best advice you’ve ever received:
When I first started my career, someone told me that I should focus on what I’m good at. This has helped me show more grace to myself when I feel like I’m the best at everything. It allows me to focus in on my skills and lean on co-workers for their strong suits. I work every day to develop a well-rounded skillset, but I’ve started to pay more attention and recognize when a skill shows up more naturally than others.

Surprising fact about you:
I’m the youngest of eight siblings and the first person in my immediate family to go to college!

Do you still seek out mentors or mentees?
I’m thankful to be a part of an organization that encourages mentorships. I currently have two internal mentors and one through NextUp. I think it is incredibly beneficial to seek out mentorships during different stages of life. Mine have helped so much in making decisions that benefit me both personally and professionally.

How do you stay motivated?
At Danone, our mission is to bring health through food to as many people as possible. It’s motivating to know that the products I sell are simultaneously in my fridge every single day. It’s easier to sell when you believe in the brands, products and ingredients you represent.

At a personal level, I spend my time refueling in ways that work best for me. I have a consistent workout routine filled with cycling, Pilates, mountain biking and yoga. It’s easier to stay motivated when you feel healthy, energized and refreshed.

Thing you’re most proud of:
I’m very proud to be the first person in my direct family to graduate from college. I was the only person from my high school to go to the University of Arkansas my year. I’m proud that I courageously chose to do something different, and it ultimately has given me a better life today.
